Grif's Marching Band Debut

The New Palestine High School Marching Dragons made their season debut tonight during half-time of the New Pal- Whiteland season opener at the brand, spankin' new Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the Colts. This was the second half of a double header that began with Fishers trouncing Noblesville. The New Palestine team seemed to study Noblesville's moves carefully and worked to emulate their effectiveness. Ah, well, we were there for the band anyway. And the band looked good! We couldn't hear them because they pointed their instruments toward the other side of the field, but their moves looked good. The Old Curmudgeon used that new camera he has previosly mentioned to video the entire routine, but apparently you have to also press the start button, not just turn on the camera and look at the display. Old people and technology. What can I say?

The Williams and Hardebeck families traveled together to the venue. Here Lauren Williams and Lauren Hardebeck (whom The Old Curmudgeon refers to as "The Lauren Sisters) enjoy the view from what would be some expensive seats at a Colts game.

Here's Grif in the band section waiting for half-time.

Grif looks enthusiastic prior to the big performance.

At first we didn't notice, but the lights on the roof started flashing and then the roof began to open -- the first time it had been opened for a game. And New Pal (and Whiteland, of course) were the first two teams in history to play in "The Luke" with the roof open. Call Ripley!

Whatever mojo Mr. Manning had to offer the Dragons on their sideline was not stout enough.

A lot of people don't know that Peyton has, for years, secretly wished to be one of the Supremes. Here he practices his moves for "Stop In The Name Of Love."

That nice little Manning boy says "Hi" to the band. This photo is from the Greenfield Reporter.

Enthusiastic New Palestine faithful support their team through thick and thin. Another Greenfield Reporter shot.

At last the time comes for the band to take the field.

[HERE, IMAGINE A STUNNING VIDEO OF THE HALF-TIME SHOW AS IF THE OLD CURMUDGEON HAD NOT BEEN OUTSMARTED BY THE CAMERA]

Night had descended by the time we made our exit. Here are some exterior shots of the stadium.

The above video was right side up when it left my computer. I don't know what the problem is on the Blog end of the pipe. Just tilt you head to the left and you'll get it.

2008 Lucy & Riley Smith Reunion

If it's the third Sunday in August, then it's time for the annual Smith reunion, during which it is positively guaranteed that no one named Smith will attend. Hey, that's just the way we roll. There's Jimmy Williams and Jan Lines.

Here we see some of the deserts available this year: the Aunt Gladys recipe chocolate cherry cake, the Aunt Sis/Aunt Eib recipe chocolate pies and (new this year) the famous McVities Dark Chocolate Digestives. Aunt Jean wrestled the McVities tube away from Lauren and sputtered that "Ronny always brings me a bunch of these when he comes." She then glared at all present and dared the rest of the family to try to sample any. "I may be old, but I can still whip any of you here," she said. I think I'm remembering that correctly. It may have happened a little differently than that, but whatever the reality, I believe my rendering is much more interesting.
Ronny Womak, getting little respect from the grumbling masses, attempted to line the entire family up for a picture. After getting all set, we had to move to a shadier spot, as there was too much light. Is there a lens with a wide enough angle to get the whole clan in?

After the pictures were taken, it was time to assume starting positions to begin elbowing each other to get the last of Mary's meatballs. Mike Williams returned the blessing this year and we were off.
Pictured at the right above is Glenna Womack who thought it would be more fun this year to play golf than to make the noodles. That's right. No noodles. This is possibly the first time in the fifty-plus years The Old Curmudgeon has attended this event that there have been no noodles. How do you spell "catastrophe?" The Old Curmudgeon is planning to hide Glenna's clubs next August.

After a big meal, we would-be Smiths feel the need to sit in the shade and commence digesting.

Jan Lines did a little busking and passed the basket to a delighted crowd of onlookers who filled it with large denomination bills.
She tells Uncle Glen to not get any ideas about a loan.

Keith Garner's grandson Keith Garner strikes an Ansel Adams-like pose. You know, if Ansel Adams had used a hand-held camera, he might have stood quite like this. Can't you see that? What's the matter with you people?

Winner of the Keith Garner Legacy Nap award this year is Brett Doubman.

Ryan and Great Grandma. Which one is the most thrilled? You be the judge.

Peggy Williams joins the discussion.

Grif, trying to appear too studious to be interested in all the surrounding conversations, is actually monitoring several on a secret listening device.

Bob Lines indicates the direction from which, according to tradition, the Mother Ship will someday return with all of the Smiths.

Catching Up

While The Old Curmudgeon was working the England travelogue, other stuff was happening in our world. The Curmudgeon wishes the world would wait until his is ready. He would like to see someone invent a cosmic "pause" button that could be utilized to make the universe hold still until he catches up. Hey, a fellow can dream can't he?

AT any rate, June saw the end of softball season for Lauren. There was the traditional night game followed by the award of trophies, balls and a patriotic fireworks display.

A word about picture quality. The Old Curmudgeon, being the thoughtful guy that he is, gave his lovely wife a new camera for her birthday so she could have something compact to take on our visit to Ron and Maurene in the Mother Country. This new camera has a lot of different settings and incomprehensible on-screen icons that transmit important information if you have memorized the key, which we have not yet accomplished. If some (or most. Or all) of the pictures seem a little blurry it may be because they are. The Old Curmudgeon is making it his project today to rectify the focusing problem with the camera. If successful, he may try the solution on his own focusing problem!

Lauren takes a little batting practice before the game.

She takes a mighty cut under the lights.

...and with her autographed ball

Fireworks capped the evening.

Here's a little taste of the stirring presentation.

Here's something you don't see everyday around here:

A duck on the roof. This is our neighbor's house across the street. The duck is, no doubt, eyeballing the swimming pool in the back yard.

Lauren spent a few days at Quaker Haven Camp

She raves about the food and love all the activities.

Grif was rewarded for a year's worth of work by the award of the Spirit of Truth medal. Grif and Tyler Rodino worked with former associate pastor Kara for an extended period of time to learn about the Religious Society of Friends. Each religious organization awards its own medal to scouts who satisfactorily complete and intensive program of study about their particular denomination.

For a number of years, the later half of summer brings with it what we refer to as "The Brickyard Weekend." It's a gathering of the Jackson clan centered around the now awkwardly named "Allstate 400 at The Brickyard."
Years ago B.C. (i.e., Before Children), Bobbie and I had tickets to the Indy 500. When the (then more sensibly titled) Brickyard 400 was proposed, those of us with tickets to the 500 were given first dibs on seats. We thought we would get tickets to the premier race just for fun. As it turned out, we obtained really good seats on the main straightaway at the first turn. We still have the tickets, but has The Old Curmudgeon feels he has seen enough of these races to get the gist of things (the cars go anti-clockwise, around and around for several hours making a significant noise in the process), he has most graciously allowed others to purchase the tickets each year. This provides a great excuse for a family gathering.

Gathered on the deck are Lauren with her Uncles and Aunt: Rick, Michele and Mike.

Lauren with Uncle Rick

Of course the Old Curmudgeon stays busy and out of trouble, for the most part.

Ready to head for the track are Bobbie's Uncle Johnny, Ryan Filyo (in hat) Jake Filyo, Rick and Grif. Lauren prepares to wave goodbye from the porch.

Those who don't attend the race get to relax with some alfresco dining at the Ram Restaurant and Brewery.

It's hard on us, but we suffered through.

Speaking of suffering, Grif survived his first N.P.H.S Marching Band summer camp. He joined his bandmates for all-day rehearsals each day. At the end of the week parents were invited to see the results. It was impressive to see the discipline and precision displayed by the unit. In order to impress upon the parents the rigor required for this level of development, parents were asked to come onto the practice grid (an asphalt parking lot) to take some instruction from our offspring. The Old Curmudgeon, a marching band veteran, can affirm that his best marching days are behind him. The band director really made these kids work. And when a break was provided for water, they all ran to their water jugs, took a big swig and ran back to formation . They are scheduled to perform at the new Lucas Oil Stadium in the near future during half-time of a game played by the high school team.
Grif, sporting a souvenir shirt from Liverpool, continues to display good form even after many hours of work in the hot sun.
